International airports in Bulgaria

Sofia Airport

In 2011, on the territory of Sofia Airport, the construction of a new control tower of Directorate Generale “Air Traffic Control” began, the tower being located in near vicinity to Terminal 2. The opening of the tower, which should happen by the end of 2012, will result in the improvement of aeronautical services quality and efficiency in the airport zone. The 50 m high tower is characterized not only by great functionality, but also by a modern architectural design.

Since the end of May 2012, Sofia Airport EAD is certified according to ISO requirements receiving both the ISO 9001:2008 (Quality management) and ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental management) certificates. The establishment of quality and environmental management standards demonstrates the willingness of Sofia Airport to effectively manage resources and show concern for environmental issues.

Future infrastructure plans of Sofia Airport include the construction of new taxiways, aiming at aircraft movement optimization and reducing taxiing time after landing and before take-off, the extension of apron area, the delivery and installation of two additional passenger boarding bridges, some interior re-organization, such as Terminal 2 passenger gallery extension and building new bus exits, increasing the space for commercial purposes.

Plovdiv International Airport is located 12 km. South-East from the city of Plovdiv, which is the second biggest city in Bulgaria. The city is situated in the very heart of the country, which makes it a suitable starting point for travelling in Bulgaria.
Serving a catchment area of more than 4,5 million people /incl. capital Sofia/ in a driving distance of 1,5 h, we believe that there are good per spectives for fast traffic growth of both passengers and cargo flights at Plovdiv Airport.
In the close proximity of the airport there are plenty of unique historical landmarks, winter and spa-resorts. The city itself with its ancient history could be very attractive destination. Plovdiv was recently announced as the oldest city in Europe, with history dating back more than 6.000 years ago. The Old Town (UNESCO world heritage), the Seven Hills, the International Fair of Bulgaria, based here, the friendly and inexpensive hotels, restaurants and night-bars could attract many tourists and businessmen.
